January 2009 Newsletter

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had enough winter already!
I remember other winters that weren’t so harsh, and we were able to get out and ride.
This year it’s either been too frigid or we’ve had too much ice and/or snow.
About all we can do is dream about better times ahead.

Looking Back...........
Looking Back…….. January 17th was the date for our annual meeting. Diane and Floyd graciously set up for 50 people and every space was filled! Thank you, everyone, for taking the time out of your busy schedules to attend. I expect that many of you were a bit overwhelmed by everything going on, but I assure you, it will all come together to make for another fabulous year for the Hags on Nags. A couple of thoughts for next year…. First, we will need a bigger meeting place. Diane suggested the Milton Town Hall and we will look into that. Another thing is to recognize that we just can’t pack everything into 2 or 3 hours. Perhaps next year we should think about a different arrangement. I still would rather meet only once and “git ‘er done” in one marathon session than drag it on over several months. What do you think? Maybe meet for two hours, take a nice hour long break to eat and socialize, and then get back to finishing up business? It’s just a thought and I would love to hear (email the Herd Mare) suggestions.
Looking Ahead……..
Bling It!
Watch for plans for “Bling It”. We’ll be getting together to add some “bling” to a favorite cap, visor, bag using glue, rhinestones, studs, etc. This will be a time to get together for some socializing and creative genius! Any other project ideas to help survive this crazy winter weather? More information on date and times to come.

Here are a few highlights from the meeting:

1) The group unanimously agreed that we should re-order cookbooks. We will begin taking pre-payment for orders starting immediately. The cost will be $7 if we order 100, $6.oo if we order 200, with proceeds going to SMILES.
2) We will offer new designs and new clothing options. 5% of the cost of each item will go to support a horse rescue or needy cause.
3) We will host a clinic with Monty Bruce, dependant on getting a date from him and securing a venue. Jessie will make contacts. The club will finance his travel expenses and arena rental, with participants paying their own costs. We will open this up for auditors to help reduce costs.
4) To fill the void left when the “Ride for the Cure” at Bong was discontinued, we will be hosting “Pink Ribbon Ride” on October 4, 2009. Donna and DeDe have agreed to be “chair-mares” of the event. Donna met with Lynn Dietrich to learn from her experiences as she coordinated “Ride for the Cure” for many years. The support from members at our meeting was phenomenal, with members volunteering for all aspects of the event. We will be working with Kettle Moraine Ranch (Home of “Knucklefest”….and soon “Knockerfest”!) for a weekend of fun and goodwill at the Southern Kettle trails that we love.
5) Hagmania will continue its tradition as a much loved event, thanks to Jesse who volunteered to head things up. Ann will look into insurance. Watch for more information on a date.
6) We talked about producing a ride journal and a Hags on Nags informational brochure. Katie volunteered to look into design and publishing options. Deana volunteered to develop a New Member packet. Thank you!
7) We set camping trips for May 15-17 (Ukarydee) June 6-7 (Gibbs Lake) July 17-19 (Governor Dodge) August 21-23 (Wildcat) September 12th (RockCut) and October 17-18 (Endless Valley).
8) We will fill in monthly day rides as volunteer hosts share dates. Sandy Robers will host a day ride on May 9th at Eagle. I’m hoping we can get a Northern Kettle ride on the calendar and some others.
9) Sandy O will continue to head up the 4th of July parade.
10) The Labor Day Filly Fling will live on, thanks to Dee!
11) The chili dump will be November 7th, with Joan as our host.
12) Deana will coordinate the West 20 Wish and Wine in November 2009.
13) Crystal will head up a winter parade (to be determined) as well as the Christmas Party.
14) We made tentative plans for a Coggins clinic in addition to a “Well Horse” clinic, featuring acupressure, basic hoof care, etc. Perhaps saddle fitting?
15) We selected a new Filly Forum: Deana, Debbie M, Sherri T, Ginny H , and Susan E. So…..though it was a bit chaotic, we did accomplish quite a bit at our meeting! And though we do a lot of things, our priority is, and always will be, horseback riding and having a good time with friends!
