Meant to Bead

Thanks to Penny for opening her shop for us on Sunday, April 6th. There were about 8 of us (Ronda, DeeDee, Ann, Sherri, Sandy, Lisa, Brenda & Wendy) that had a great time making some beautiful bracelets and earrings. If you get a chance, stop in and see Penny at her shop is at 1327 N Wright Rd # 5B Janesville, WI 53546.
Thanks, Penny!

Taste of Endurance

After postponing the ride more than once because of weather, the third time (April 26th) was a charm. Well, maybe the weather still wasn’t great, but participants had a good time.
Several of our HONS participated…either riding or as volunteers. HON Linda Pakes and her husband finished with 1st and 2nd place in the 10 mile race and HON Maggie got 1st in the 5 mile race. HON Diane Finney and husband Floyd and HON Dee volunteered to make it a successful day.
Congratulations!

First Aid Clinic

April 26th was also the date of the First Aid for the Trail Horse Clinic at the Morie Waud Clinic. Dr. Britany Bensen did an informative presentation, which she then gave to us. (I can burn a copy if you bring me a CD)
Included were tips for preventing, recognizing, and dealing with Dehydration and Colic, as well as caring for wounds. After the Power Point presentation, there was an opportunity for questions and answers.
We then went to the arena and practiced listening for the heartbeat and gut sounds, taking temperature and pulse and checking for dehydration.
Thanks to Ginny C. and Elaine for bringing their 3 horses and to Crystal for bringing hers.
We presented Dr. Bensen with an honorary HON membership and gave her a Hags on Nags denim shirt. The staff at Morie Waud is great! View the photos!

Tracy Porter Clinic

The 1st annual HON Confidence Clinic will be coming up soon on Sunday, May 11th. This is sure to be an emotional training opportunity where together, you and your horse’s confidence will grow stronger by improving ground and riding skills.
You will learn how to safely negotiate scary objects and the unknown and to control your emotions. Step out of your present comfort zone and into a new one! The clinic will run from 10:00 a.m. to 5 p.m. and will cost $175 per person.
For sign up and further details, Contact Diane Finney at (608) 868-4543 or dpapcke@centurytel.net

Cookbook Project

Marise has been busy typing and perusing the internet for ideas for our cookbook.
One thing is certain….this project will be time consuming! Something the committee is exploring is the use of a cookbook publishing company such as www.morriscookbooks.com.
The formatting is easy to use and they take care of the set up and printing, etc. The cost for going with something like this is more than we planned (at least $4.40 each for 100 cookbooks) and then add a custom cover design, etc. The big question is do you think we should go ahead with producing a more professional looking book? Will people be willing to buy the cookbooks? Please email me or Marise and let us know how you feel about this.
If you have recipes to add, you can send them to Marise at flipsfarm@centurytel.net or snail mail to Marise Flippin 9130 N Kidder Rd Edgerton, WI 53534.

SMILES

First came the “thank you” for our donation.
As has been our tradition, we are sponsoring a class in Suzanne’s name at the annual SMILES show.
Next came the invitation. We are all invited to attend “A Horse of a Different Color” which is a wine and cheese reception at the Grand Geneva Gold Pavilion. This is a sneak preview of the beautiful “Horsin Around Town” colts that will be adorning Lake Geneva from June through September.
The reception is Saturday, May 31st from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. with a suggested donation of $20 per person.
Hope that some of you will make it over for this worthwhile event!

Riding Lessons at Growing Oaks

Lessons are starting!!!
Missy is working with riders to develop their skills. The cost is $15 per person for a small group lesson.
Lessons will be during the week and will vary according to Missy’s work schedule, probably starting around 6 or 6:30 p.m.
Please contact Jelaine and let her know if you are interested, as well as what kind of work you are thinking about.

Trail Ride May 10th

Please join us for a trail ride on Saturday, May 10th at the Eagle Trailhead on Hwy S between Palmyra and Eagle.
Saddle up and be ready to ride out at 11:00. Sandy Robers will lead us around some of the more unfamiliar trails. Pack a lunch to enjoy after the ride….. it’ll be a beautiful day! If you have questions or need directions, please contact Sandy Robers.
One word of caution….the McMillan shooting range will be loud on Saturday morning. Typically, the horses get used to the noise before we get too close, but we are planning to ride out in that direction.
(This is a change from the planned Ottawa trailhead)

Camping Trip May 16-18

The first official camping trip of the season is coming up soon. Ukarydee Equestrian Campground adjoins the Castle Rock Horse Trails and offers plenty of room, great trails, horse pens and ELECTRICITY!
They have a whole section reserved for HONS, so give them a call if you think you can make it. (608) 564-2233 and tell them you are with the Hags on Nags.
We just want to keep it simple, so we are not planning any group meals or anything. We are looking forward to some nice riding and some great campfire laughs. Hope to see you at Ukarydee!!

March Mystery Member

Ok….last time you didn’t do so well with the guessing. This is my last attempt and I even have THREE photos to help you!
This Mystery Member started riding when she was 8 years old and owned her first horse, “Thunder.” She had horses until about 1967 and then started raising a family. This HON got back into horses through riding and training other peoples’ horses in the late 1970’s.
She bought her first “new” horse in the early 1980s and has had her ever since. Our Mystery Member also has two other horses, a pony, 3 dogs, two cats, and, oh yes, a husband.
Her love for animals runs deep and this gal claims that she will always have horses and other animals….even if it means owning miniatures when she is 80! Can you guess who this is?

PLEASE get a short auto-biography and picture of yourself to Lisa, our webgoddess!! With so many members, it really helps to have a reference. I think I counted almost 70 HON members now, but only about 1/3 of you have completed a profile. She will have more time now to publish the pages than she will during trail riding season.
Come on, ladies….git ‘er done!

Welcome Terry Kehring to our club! Some of you may have already met Terry at the First Aid clinic. Terry lives in Milton but boards her horse in Brodhead at Crazy Acres. There are about 8 miles of trails at Crazy Horse so she has some nice riding.
Terry does not have a trailer, though, so if some of you are willing to help her with transportation, I’m sure she will be grateful.
Welcome, Terry!

***** Speaking of “youngsters,” my husband and I were recently in California visiting our son and his family. One of the things we did this time was to go horseback riding in Hollywood Hills. ***** I recently got an email from a gal named Pat Fleming. She is part of another group of “Hags on Nags”…. from southeast South Dakota. Their group started in 1999 with just three members and has now grown to 25 members. They ride every Thursday in the summer months and meet for lunch and movies, etc in the winter. Ride on!
