August 2009 Newsletter |
Where is the summer going?I can hardly believe it is already August. It just doesn’t seem right to wait so long for a season and then watch it slip away so quickly. Hope you make the best of the remaining summer days! |
Looking Back...... Pink Ribbon Ride July 11th MeetingThanks to those of you who came to the Pink Ribbon Ride July 11th Meeting. There was a nice turnout, with about 15 HONs enjoying the afternoon socializing, “grazing,” and swimming…and a little work, too. While Donna was lounging in the pool, the rest of us worked out a few more details related to the fall fundraiser. (Just joking…Donna’s been doing a great job of moving us forward. No one has worked harder on this fundraiser than Donna! Thank you, Donna!) It sure is exciting to see how things are progressing. Thank you to everyone that has been involved. Please remember that this is not just one committee doing this project. Technically, there really is no committee….rather the whole club. There is a lot to do and the date is getting closer and closer. Please contact Donna and volunteer to get involved on October 4th. More recent pictures from our “meeting.” |
Governor Dodge Camping July 16-18 Record low temperatures for July were no problem for campers at Governor Dodge this weekend. The cool temperatures were actually quite welcomed, since it made for very comfortable riding and sleeping! Who would think that temperatures would be in the 60s in the middle of July! HONs camping at this wonderful park this year were Diane and Floyd, Kathy and Clint, Ann and Rob, Cindy, Sandy Rb and Sandy Rg and Sandy O, her friend Ann, Sherri, Kris, Linda P, Ronda S, Sue N, Amny, and her mom, and Audrey, Ginny and Sally came for a day ride. Nice people, nice weather, nice horses, nice trails…..what more could we ask for? Maybe being as skinny as we looked in that mirrored trailer of Ronda’s?? Who would think we could get so many laughs out of seeing our reflection on the side of a trailer….well, you just had to be there. Check out past pictures and recent pictures from our trip to Governor Dodge State Park Camping. |
| Coming Soon..... |

Wildcat Mountain August 21-23 This has become a favorite camping spot for HONs…..and this year I think we have the whole horse camp reserved for Hags on Nags members. Deb L., one of our members from Minnesota even plans to be there! It’s a beautiful place with some great trails and there is a lot to do in the area besides horseback riding. Hagmania September 13 What started out 7 years ago as a “horsey game day” for HONS and their families and friends has definitely become a much loved tradition. Hagmania has become a day that everyone looks forward to and we find that each year is better than the last. We’ve got a variety of games planned, generally things that don’t require a lot of speed but do generate lots of laughs. There will be games such as “Egg and Spoon” and “Ribbon Race” and “Hanky Thief” along with variations of barrel races, such as the “Ribbon Race” and the “Champagne Race.” Unlike most shows where each event has an entry fee, this is a real deal….$10 for the entire day per person or $25 for the entire family. The fees cover ribbons and trophies and a porta potty! If you can’t ride this year, please volunteer to help out so others can ride. As in previous years, the Lima 4H group will have a concession stand with great food and drinks. Print out the flyer and post it on your fridge and share it will friends and family. Let’s make Hagmania 2009 the best yet! And remember, friends and family are welcomed to join us, as riders or spectators. The event starts at 10:00 a.m. and is held at the Rinehart farm, 4133 E County Road N, Milton, WI. If you have any questions or want to volunteer to help, contact Jessie W. via Email. Check out the past pictures as well as recent pictures. Also there is a video from last years as well. |
Other things of Interest…… Ad PostedDid you see our ad in WI Horseman News this month? A big thanks to Deb S. for her help in getting some great advertising for our club and for our October 4th Pink Ribbon Ride for the Cure. Deb not only wrote articles for the August and September issues sharing her own personal experiences, but she also got donations to cover the cost ($100 per page) of the two full page ads running in August and September. Thanks also to Katie D. for designing the August ad and to Kris A. for designing the September ad. Amy J. is working on a poster featuring more specifics for the day of th event. HONs are wonderful!! |
T Shirts? It’s time to think about ordering our Pink Ribbon Ride for the Cure T-shirts! Since we have not gotten any donations specifically for T Shirts, the shirts we have made will be for sale only. The plan right now (still subject to some change?) is to have light gray shirts made (the same brand as the parade shirts….a ladies cut) with the Ride for the Cure logo that Jessie W created…. the lady rider and pink ribbon. If we go with a small transfer logo on the left chest area, the cost will probably be approximately $6 per shirt. I have already gotten requests from non-HON riders for these shirts so we will be ordering some to sell to the public. Since this is our first time, we need to keep this as simple as possible and not go way out with a bunch of different options. We need a volunteer to handle shirt orders, collecting money, etc. PLEASE contact me ASAP if you are willing to take this on. We will need to get going on this right away. Thanks. |
Our Website Come on, ladies! Have you noticed how many members we have vs. how many bios we have posted? Our group is growing every day and one of the best ways to get to know each other through these write ups where you share a little background about yourself. It doesn’t have to be anything that would identify you to outsiders (no last names, addresses, etc) but it is a nice way to get to know something about you, your hobbies, your horses, etc. Write up what you want to say and send it to Sandy Rog. via Email, along with a picture, and I will see that it gets posted. Don’t put it off any longer, please! |
Pink Ribbon Roundup October 4 Our Pink Ribbon Frundraising Event is getting closer...... We will soon be getting information to you about selling the raffle tickets. As soon as they become available, please do your best to get out and sell them. Also, remember that we would like as many pre-registrations as possible. You can download registration/pledge forms from our website and mail in your check to pre-register before Sept 28. You can continue to collect more donations to add to it, but getting the early registrations will help us determine food quantitiy, etc. We will definitely need lots of volunteers…please watch for opportunities to sign up and help out. |
Check Out This Website! This website won’t be up for long so check it out right away! We’ve got an eBay auction going on right now, with proceeds going towards our Pink Ribbon Ride for the Cure Fundraiser. Thanks to Amy J. who worked with Legends of the Field to secure a Breast Cancer Tribute bat signed by Milwaukee Brewer Corey Hart. There may be other similar items coming also….check it out! |
Welcome New Members..... A big welcome to this month’s new members! JoAnn S. lives in Portage, WI. She has a 20 year old quarterhorse/draft gelding, a 9 year old Paint mare and a 22 year old Standardbred mare. JoAnn read about our group in WI Horseman News recently and shares our passion for horses and trail riding. JoAnn moved to Portage in 1992 from Chicago where she boarded her horse and had buddies at the stable to ride with. Disappointed that her Portage neighbors with horses never seem to ride, she is looking forward to saddling up with the Hags on Nags. Welcome, Joann!! We also have Maria C. to welcome. Maria lives in Harland, WI and is looking forward to being with like minded horse lovers/riders to share a common passion and have some fun. Maria’s horse is recovering from a leg injury sustained last year. She lives on a small farm with an arena and some trails. She is a certified equine massage therapist and….get this….a retired opera singer and voice teacher!! Welcome, Maria! |
