October 2008 Newsletter |

Fall is definitely in the air! Let’s hope that we all get plenty of opportunities to get out and enjoy some great riding this month. |
Hagmania
WOW! Hagmania 2008 was definitely the best ever! The day started out with some heavy fog, but when that lifted, it was a beautifully sunny day. Carrie did an awesome job of organizing everything, and the volunteers were much appreciated! Kudos to Donna for tabulated points all day long…and still finding time to take some good pictures! The trail course was back again this year, challenging, and definitely a favorite. (Thanks Jelaine and Jessie!) The Egg and Spoon class had the highest number of entries, with Floyd and his young mustang gelding, Scout, coming out as winners. (We always knew you were a winner, Floyd!) The timed events were a blast…and it was great to see everyone, from the most timid riders to the competitive “speedsters,” participating. |
We had a few “Extreme Riders,” but certainly young Audrey H. was most courageous! Audrey’s young mount seemed to have his own games to play that day. Fortunately, Audrey wasn’t too seriously hurt. After seeing an orthopedic doctor, it was determined that she has a lateral ligament strain or tear which should heal without surgery. Audrey is wearing a brace to stabilize things and she is going to physical therapy..it sure could have been worse. Hang in there, Audrey!
Our High Point winner for Hagmania 2008 was Colleen Rainwater’s daughter, Sabrina. As you may recall, Colleen and Sabrina came all the way from Indiana to participate in the day’s events. The Reserve High Point winner was Jennifer Ruse with her mustang, “Moose”. Also most worthy of mention was the “Golden Team’ of Shirley May and her trusty horse. Shirley, you are an inspiration to us all! |
After expenses were paid (trophies, porta-potty, etc) we still came out a little bit ahead. Thanks to all who came out to watch, help, participate! And a big thanks to Lee for once again sharing her beautiful farm with us! Check out lots more photos on our website! |
HON Marise
Those of you that were at Hagmania may well have gotten your photo CD by the time you read this. I am sure that you will agree that the photos that Marise took are outstanding. Not only did she spend the entire day behind the lens of her camera, but she has spent countless hours at her computer, downloading, editing and copying. How fortunate we are to have Marise offer her talents to us! (Remember her first time at Hagmania and she went home with a puppy?) The exciting news is that Marise will soon be making her home in Mexico! The Flippen’s beautiful home is up for sale and she and her husband will be leaving sometime later this month for a village in Mexico that will become their new home. What an exciting and BUSY time for her….and how generous of Marise to take the time to give us the wonderful gift of her photography. Thank you, Marise! We love you!! Our HON network is certainly expanding across the continent. PS….that puppy is a BIG boy now and is going with them to Mexico! |
Bong
Please consider volunteering to organize a Breast Cancer Fund Raiser for 2009. We will need to get started in January. Contact me if you are willing. And thanks to those of you that supported this worthy cause with a donation this year.

Endless Valley
Our annual trip to Endless Valley is just around the corner. This has traditionally been a wonderful “Girls Get-Away Weekend” with great riding scenery and laugh-filled bonding time. This year we will definitely have a full house….I think there are about 14 of us going, but there would certainly still be room for campers. Sherri will be contacting those of you that are signed up in order to arrange meals, sleeping arrangements, etc. We love the facilities and love the fun! Hope to see you on October 18th! |
Movie Time
How about dinner and a movie? Several of us will be meeting in Janesville this Thursday, October 9th for dinner at Cozumel and then a movie at the Rock Theater….a new western called “Appaloosa.” As much as I would have preferred the title to refer to my favorite breed of horse, such is not the case. The ratings are good on this one, please consider joining us. It’ll be a good time! Be sure to wear your cowgirl hat and red bandana! Contact Donna for information. |
Chili Dump
Mark your calendar and think warm thoughts! Our annual Chili Dump is coming up early next month, November 1st to be exact. Make your favorite chili, bring a sample and we’ll combine it all to make a lunch to remember! For those of you that want an alternative to cooking, we’ll also need bowls, spoons, bread and other things. Joan is heading up this event, so please contact her and let her know what you want to bring. |
West 20 Wish and Wine
Watch for details on this one. Lisa is working on setting up a date for our Wish and Wine evening at West 20. It’s a chance to get together, sample some wine and appetizers, and browse the store after hours. Believe me, that store is packed with merchandise right now! You can make a wish list and Julie will see that it gets to the “Santas” in your life. |
Holiday Horse Markets
There are a couple of great equine opportunities for horse lovers coming up in November, both happen to be the weekend of November 22-23. There is the Holiday Horse Market in Wisconsin Dells, which will be at the Quality Inn-Antiqua Bay. This year, in addition to the shopping, stunt man and trick trainer Tommie Turvey will be there! Also Heather Kitching will be presenting natural hoof care education. It seems to get better every year. Visit http://www.holidayhorsemarket.com |
Another option is the new Equestrian Lifestyle Expo and Holiday Market at Arlington Heights (Chicago), Illinois. They say it is Everything Equestrian, whether you’re looking for feed, tack, togs, a barn or just a good time learning more about horses and every aspect of the equestrian lifestyle…you’ll find it at the Expo.

News from our Members

****** Our sympathy goes out to Ginny H. who recently lost her sister. Ginny’s sister fought a brave battle against cancer, with Ginny at her side. Unfortunately, it was a fight they couldn’t win. This is the second sister Ginny has lost this year. Our hearts go out to you, Ginny! Know that you have a whole lot of HON sisters that are there for you.
***** From Michelle.....The SMILES "Mane Event" auction was Saturday, October 4th and it was a great success. There were two beautiful ponies that sold for over $6,000 each. That lovely mirrored mosaic one was the high seller, bringing $6,700. Michelle was fortunate to be seated with the author of the Painted Ponies book and reports that they had a great time getting to know one another. To quote Michelle, "We met a lot of wonderful people and I'm really happy to have helped out. I told the volunteer organizer that she can count on me every time."
***** Good luck to our members that are going to the World Appaloosa competition in Fort Worth, Texas. The show is taking place from October 24 - November 1. You can visit http://www.appaloosa.com/worlds-show/world-show.htm for the schedule. You can catch the live camera stream as well as get the Top Ten placings.

***** On a happy note, Jeannie got married!!! It was a lovely outdoor wedding on a beautiful late September afternoon. The ceremony was followed by a cookout and bonfire. It was lovely. The bride and groom are living near Lake Lorraine (Whitewater area) so I’m sure we will still be seeing Jeannie around. Congratulations, Jeannie and new husband Dan!

***** The WI Horse Council Newsletter this month has a nice full page article about WAMSTAR. There is mention of the Hags on Nags in the article and how WAMSTAR got their start, among other things. Right now I only have a printed newsletter (which you are welcomed to get from me) but I have requested a password so that you will all be able to access the newsletter on line. I’ll share that as soon as it’s available. In the meantime, congratulations on the nice article, WAMSTAR! Also see them on YouTube.

***** Audrey (A.K.A. Gadget) recently worked her magic and came up with a way to haul hay for her recent trip to Missouri. Leave it to “Gadget” to design and install a hay rack on top of her trailer! She shared this photo…hope she shares how her trip was too!
