November 2008 Newletter

As any trail rider would agree, the best kind of turkey is the kind that is found roasted and served up for a meal!! May the turkeys you encounter this month be stuffed and yummy! And let’s not forget that we have much to be thankful for.

Looking Back...........
Movie Time

Several of us met in early October for dinner and a movie. Donna organized this one but, quite to her chagrin; we didn’t all follow her lead to wear a bandana and our cowboy hats. Bad HONS! Regardless, we enjoyed our meal at Cozumel’s in Janesville and then went to the theatre for “Appaloosa.”  Everyone agreed that the movie was great, despite the fact that there was not a single Appaloosa horse in the movie! Participating were Donna, Linda, Kris, Ronda, Deb, Sherri, Wendy and husband, and me. Thanks, Donna, for organizing! Photos

Endless Valley

They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Looking at the many photos from our Endless Valley trip, you can see that the fall scenery was fabulous. You can also see that we had a great turnout, with 17 HON members showing up for the weekend! What the pictures can’t tell you is what a wonderful time we had. We got in some great rides and enjoyed a lot of laughs. In the evening some of us sat around the campfire and managed to keep the “chimichanga” away from the horses (referring to a “chupacabra,” the blood sucking creature that generally like goats best!) while others watched a scary movie inside. All in all, it was a pretty perfect weekend. A big thanks to Sherri for organizing everything! And thanks to all that participated: . Sherri, Sandy R, Sandy O, Sandy R, Kris, Cindy, Ronda, Crystal , Linda, Ellen, Vicki, Hannah, Amy, Ginny, Sally, and Dee, Diane and Floyd and Pauline and friends. We’re already signed up for the same weekend next year! Photos

Adios, Marise!

Over 20 HONs gathered on Sunday, October 26 to say their goodbyes to Marise. Marise and her husband have sold their beautiful home near Milton and are headed to a more temperate climate in Mexico . We wish you well, Marise, and thank you for your contributions to our club. We look forward to hearing from you, our SOB (South of the Border) HON. Marise has a new email address…check the Member Contact list on our website.  Amigas Para Siempre! Photos

Chili Dump

What a beautiful day we had for the 2008 Chili Dump! Over 30 women gathered at Horsemen’s Park at Palmyra to enjoy the trails and camaraderie. The weather was perfect, and it was great to see such a fantastic turnout. There were so many trailers in the day parking lot that we had no choice but to spill into the campsites. As with many of these large groups, we split up into smaller groups, all meeting along the trail and back again at the pavilion. And the chili…. Mmmmmm. Have you heard of the notion that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts? Well, that’s the way it was with the chili. While the individual chili samples tasted good, combining all the different batches together makes it fantastic! Thanks to Joan for organizing this event and to everyone for making it such a wonderful day. Photos

November 11th

With so many of our sons, daughters, even husbands involved in the war in the Middle East , please take time to consider those serving overseas. November 11th is Veterans Day….say a “thank you” and a prayer for these wonderful people.
Consider too, this quote, courtesy of Carol……

" Look back at our struggle for freedom,
trace our present day's strength to it's source;
And you'll find that man's pathway to glory,
is sewn with the bones of a horse"

Looking Ahead………
West 20 Wish and Wine
Saturday, November 29th! The date is set for the “Wish and Wine” event at West 20 Ranch and Saddle Store.  For those of you that haven’t attended this event…here’s what’ll be going on. After the store closes, Julie opens the store just for us. We will have a holiday table set up in the back room where you can sample appetizers and sip some wine. You are also free to roam the store…which you will see is PACKED with SO many horse related items…from boots and clothes to tack to every kind of horsey thing you can imagine. If you see something you like and decide to make a purchase, you will receive a discount that night. If you see something you’d like to put on your wish list, Julie will send an email with the information to your Santa(s).  Plan to arrive a little after 6:00 pm and bring a bottle of wine and a small appetizer. Contact Lisa T if you have questions. See you on the 29th! Photos from last year

Holiday Horse Markets
There are a couple of great equine opportunities for horse lovers coming up in November, both happen to be the weekend of November 22-23. There is the Holiday Horse Market in Wisconsin Dells, which will be at the Quality Inn-Antiqua Bay. This year, in addition to the shopping, stunt man and trick trainer Tommie Turvey will be there! Also Heather Kitching of Eagle Valley Equestrian Center will be presenting natural hoof care education.  It seems to get better every year. Sylvia Scott will also be presenting.

Equestrian Lifestyle Expo and Holiday Market
Another option is the new Equestrian Lifestle Expor and Holiday Market at Arlington Heights (Chicago), Illinois. Or see Map. They say it is Everything Equestrian, whether you’re looking for feed, tack, togs, a barn or just a good time learning more about horses and every aspect of the equestrian lifestyle…you’ll find it at the Expo. Be sure to check schedule of attendees . Some of the presenters are Julie Goodnight and Randel Raub, Ph.D. Full Schedule link will be up soon.
Visit the Horsemans Council for more info.

Hunting
It’s that time again. Get out the orange clothing…consider orange for your horse too!
The entire KMSF-SU (Kettle Moraine State Forest-South Unit) is within the Chronic Wasting Disease Management Zone (which includes all of Rock, Walworth, and Jefferson counties and portions of Racine, Kenosha, Dodge, and Waukesha counties.) Please make note: Deer hunting season framework for 2008:

Whitewater Christmas Parade
There is interest, once again, in making an appearance at the Whitewater Christmas Parade. The parade is Thursday, December 4th. We will be meeting around 4:30 before the parade to decorate the horses and ourselves and need to be lined up by 5:30.  If you were at the Chili Dump, you got a sneak preview of our “costume.” There will be elf boots for the horses along with a poinsettia garland with lights. Did I mention that we will be wearing elf hats? It should be a lot of fun…..let’s hope the weather cooperates!
Contact Crystal if you have any questions. Please see Last Years Christmas Parade Photos.

Christmas Party
Mark your calendar for Saturday, December 13th. That’s the date for our annual Christmas party. Our party organizer, Crystal, has arranged for a private room at Randy’s Restaurant and Fun Hunter’s Brewery in Whitewater! Information about the selected menu options will be coming. If you haven’t been there before, know that you’ll get a good meal and a nice atmosphere! Dinner will be at 6:30, with cocktails at 6:00. Once again, we will do a small gift exchange. Please bring a wrapped, horse theme gift costing under $15. We will be asking for RSVPs, so please put this in your plans. We’ve always had a great time! View Flyer or See Last Years Photos

News from our Members

***** from Audrey on her trip to Missouri
Well, on October 3, 2008 we headed out for our annual trip to Duke, Mo for the 4J Big Piney Week for beautiful riding, great camping and Heather Kitchingfantastic friends.  Our trip down was very uneventful this year, thank goodness, (last year Kris, or Piney as we call her, broke down near Rolla , Mo and we all sat around at a wayside with her and her trailer while her hubby went and got the truck repaired).  The weather down in Duke was absolutely awesome, cool nights and mornings warming up to low to mid 70's during the day… perfect for riding. We only had a little rain on one day but we toughed it out and rode anyway.  The riding and scenery there is beautiful, riding along the Big Piney River with numerous water crossings, to riding up and on top of the beautiful bluffs and lookouts.  There are trails for everyone there, steep narrow rocky trails to wide rolling ones.  It truly is a vacation, as all your food is furnished and no dishes or clean up for the entire week.  The price is very reasonable, only $240.00 for the entire week, which includes your camping, with water and electric hookups, your covered stall with shavings furnished and all your meals, which are 3 meals a day, all you can eat.  The people at the “4-J” are so friendly and we have made so many new friends down there.  Everyday there is usually something going on. They have a photographer one day to do group and individual pictures, a couple nights they have a dance in the pavilion, an auction and tack sale and horse auction and lots of fun events.  Here is a link to their website http://www.4-j.net/
One day we took a joyride to Eminence, MO and went sight seeing and shopping for the day, That is where the picture from Alley Springs is from, that natural spring pumps out 8 million gallons of water a day, and it was so beautiful there.  We also did our annual event of going out at night in the fields and spotting as many armadillo's as possible, which this year there were not too many. We think they were washed away by the floods they had there in the spring and again in Sept.!
If you ever get a chance to go, I would highly recommend it.  Check out the photos of the scenery down there and snapshots of part of our large group that come from WI, IL, IN and MO.  to all meet and enjoy each other's company and enjoy great riding.
Hope you enjoy and Happy Trails to everyone.
