Kentucky Trail/Resort Review

Trail Name Land Between the Lakes - Wranglers Campground
Web Site Land Between The Lakes
State, County, Nearest Town Kentucky, Trigg County, Golden Pond
Terrain Mostly wooded with hardwoods, gently rolling, some hills and the two large lakes border the sides of LBL.  Part of the 170,000 acre National Recreation area offering sightseeing, boating, fishing, hunting, hiking, biking, swimming, ATV trails in a separate area from horses.  Other things to do:  Homeplace living history farm, Woodlands Nature Station, Elk & Bison Prairie, Golden Pond Planetarium and Visitor Center.
Trails At least 35 miles of well marked trails with varying sized loops.  Some of the trails close to camp show some wear, but get better the further out you go.  A few miles of the trail is in the State of Tennessee.
Facilities Very clean facilities.  We rented a small camping shelter, which was a small cabin with a double bed and bunk beds, cement floor, small table, and electricity, bring your own bedding.  Very plain but served the purpose and reasonable priced ($29).  The shower house, horse wash rack, and barn with horse stalls were all nicely located close by.  Cabins are reservable.  Stalls and camping, I believe are still first come, first serve.  We were there in the middle of the week after Easter so had no trouble getting a stall, but were told they go fast on weekends.  By the time we left on Thursday, we had a neighbor putting up a kid's play tent on a camping site he wanted to save for his family coming on the weekend as the camping sites have to be occupied to reserve them.  A firepit and picnic table were part of our cabin area along with posts to run a tie line (bring your own tie line) for horses.  About six different camping areas each with their own barns and shower houses.  Also had a restuarant and store, dumping station, gatehouse, resident assistant and horse rentals for guided trail rides.
What I liked most . . Within a one day drive from our area.  Very nice facility.  Was not crowded when we were there.
What I liked least . . If you had to use the tie line area some of them were well worn (probably dug deep by pawing horses) and could have used some fill.  I think they would puddle during a rain.

Trail Name Mammoth Cave National Park
Web Site Double J Stables and Campgrounds
State, County, Nearest Town Kentucky, Edmundson County, Mammoth Cave
Terrain Rolling, with steep areas, wooded, numerous water crossings.
Trails 70 miles of beautiful scenic trails, for the most part the trails are challenging. The one trail we crossed back and forth across the creek numerous times and the scenery was awesome, there are steep challenging areas on the trials as well as flat areas, you are riding the river valleys of the Green and Nolin Rivers. The trails are very well marked.
Facilities We stayed at a private campground that is located just off the trail head, you ride right into the Mammoth Cave trails. There is camping with water and electric hook-ups, inside and outside stalls, hitching rails at each site, a very nice bathroom and shower facility above the barn. An outside wash area for the horses, and shavings for the stalls are furnished. Some of the stalls are a little on the small side but still work fine. The outside stalls are 4 sided gate panels with water spigots right there.
What I liked most . . The scenery was beautiful, and the riding was great, a few spots were pretty challenging. There are so many places of interest to go and sight see and visit. We toured the Caves at Mammoth Cave National park and they were beautiful. We also stopped and viewed the Nolan Dam which was really neat. All in all just a very fun and relaxing trip.
What I liked least . . It is a dry county so we had to drive 50 miles for the queen to get some beer. Make sure you take any alcohol with you that you may need. Not being able to stay longer.
