Wisconsin Trail/Resort Review

Trail Name Kickapoo Reserve
Web Site End of the Trail Equine Campground
County, Nearest Town Vernon County, Town of Ontario
Terrain hilly, river crossings and spectacular views on high bluffs and narrow valleys
Trails The Kickapoo reserve is a sandy trail that traverses through the old Kickapoo reserve. River crossings, bridge crossings.
Facilities Camp at End of the Trail campground.  Each camp site has picket lines but you can also reserve a pasture or a stall in the main barn.  Fire wood provided and hot showers FREE.
What I liked most . . . The camp hosts take you through the kickapoo and you have lunch at a local restaurant where there are picket lines for your horses.  If you don't want to make the return trip they will help you get your trailer over to the restaurant so you can trailer back to camp.
What I liked least . . . Having to go home

Trail Name Magnolia Bluff
Web Site Rock County Parks - Magnolia Bluff
County, Nearest Town Rock County, Evansville
Terrain This park has 120 acres of beautiful rock outcroppings and vistas. Because the park has steep area, extreme caution must be used by all visitors.
Trails The bridal trail is about three mile long, with very steep decline and up hill areas. There are 2 loops, one at the top of the bluff, another at the bottom.
Facilities Pit bathrooms, picnic area, and a large grassy parking area for horse trailers are provided at the upper parking lot. Camping is not allowed in any Rock County Park. There is fresh water provided with an old-fasioned pump.
What I liked most . . . No visit to Magnolia Bluff is complete until you walk out to the peak of the bluff and look out over several counties to the west.
What I liked least . . . The steep bridal trails getting up and down the bluff can be a challenge for some riders.

Trail Name Donald Park
Web Site Dane Co. Parks, WI
County, Nearest Town Dane County, Springdale
Terrain Open fields, woods, rolling hills, farms, good scenery with variety. No road riding.  I took my 13 year old daughter and her friend here and we had no problems on the trail at all.
Trails Well marked and wide enough for comfortable riding.  Trimmed out well. The trail within the park was being expanded last year (I have heard that it is comparable to Gibbs Lake).  We rode on a trail that takes you out of the park, supposedly 10 miles out and back.  I hope to try the trail within the park this year.
Facilities Parking for trailers, picnic tables, bathrooms, maps for the trails.
What I liked most . . . It was not too far away from my home (about an hour)and there were two different trails to choose from. There are three other riding parks within Dane county, one is McCarthy park.  We have been there a couple of times and liked to pack a lunch and spend about an hour or two riding and then having lunch.
What I liked least . . . The gas prices, and not that I should hate it or anything but there is a $5 fee, however there is a Dane county trail riding committee that are constantly updating and working on these parks to make it available for us horsewomen and our friends to enjoy.

Trail Name La Riviere Horse Park
Web Site n/a
County, Nearest Town Crawford County, Prairie Du Chien
Terrain Mixed. Some very steep and rocky, similar to mountain riding, some rolling and sandy. Lots of woods riding.
Trails Trails are from moderate to high degree of difficulty. Not the place for novice riders unless with experienced riders. Over 300 acres plus adjoining landowners allowed connecting trails to the Children's Ranch to equal over 500 acres total
Facilities Camping areas. One with electric, one rustic. Hitch rails and tree's for overhead tethering (bring own tether lines etc.). Pit toilets. Auto waterer for horses, all weather well for human consumption. Fire rings on premise can be moved to where you like them. Shelter houses at both camps, one with electric. Camping is by $ Donation. Please be sure to leave something!
What I liked most . . . Wonderful views, variety of trails, open and wooded riding. Close to town for the "Oops, forgot the....." so can go to stores in less than 10 minutes.
What I liked least . . . Starting to get overcrowded as more and more folks find out about it. Some of the trails are treacherous after rain.
